Balod became Chhattisgarh's 27th district on 1 January 2012, notified as a civil district that day and as a revenue district from 10 January 2012; before that it was part of Durg.[2]
The district covers 3,527 sq km, with 7 blocks and 704 villages.[1]
Balod is 44 km from Dhamtari and 58 km from Durg.[1]
The town stands on the Tandula river; the Tandula (Adamabad) dam was built beside it in 1912 on the Sukha and Tandula rivers.[3]
The Tandula, Kharkhara and Gondli dams are the district's main sources of irrigation; about 93% of its average 1,089.8 mm of rain falls between June and September.[3]
The district is known for paddy, gram, sugarcane and wheat.[1]
Bhilai Steel Plant draws its water from the Tandula dam, 5 km from Balod, where the Sua resort run by Chhattisgarh Tourism serves visitors.[4]
The Ganga Maiya temple at Jhalmala, on the Balod–Durg road, began as a small hut built by a local fisherman; the Siyadevi temple stands in forest beside a waterfall.[4]
