WhatsApp Business API for Kohima's homestays, pickle makers and colleges

Every December the state's ten-day Hornbill Festival brings visitors up the 74 km from Dimapur. For a Kohima homestay, each booking is a small state machine: asked, quoted, held, paid, reminded, arrived.

Kohima in nine lines

From the Kohima district administration, Nagaland's tourism department, IBEF and Invest India.

Kohima district covers 1,463 sq km, bordered by Assam and Dimapur to the west, Phek to the east, Manipur and Peren to the south and Wokha to the north.[1]

The district site lists a population of 2,67,988 and a literacy rate of 85.23%, in 58 villages, 5 rural development blocks and one municipality.[1]

Kohima was the first seat of modern administration in the region, as headquarters of the Naga Hills District after G.H. Damant became Political Officer in 1879.[1]

The Hornbill Festival, conceptualised in 2000, is a ten-day annual event run by the state government to show Nagaland's cultural heritage; the 2026 edition runs 1–10 December.[4]

The tourism department describes the Kohima War Cemetery, remembered for the Battle of the Tennis Court, as a memorial to those who died in the Battle of Kohima in the Second World War.[4]

Kisama Heritage Village lies 12 km from Kohima on National Highway 39; the district also lists Touphema tourist village.[2]

Dimapur's airport and railway station, about 74 km away, are the nearest; IBEF reports that tunnel work on the Dimapur–Kohima rail line began in March 2024.[3],[5]

Nagaland's first medical college, NIMSR, was inaugurated in Kohima on 14 October 2023 with 100 MBBS seats.[5]

Invest India's ODOP list gives Kohima pickle as its product, with the Naga chilli second.[6]

A Hornbill booking, state by state

A visitor from Guwahati writes to a Kohima homestay in October about rooms for the festival. Follow the booking through its states, or switch to the paths where the hold lapses or the guest cancels.

The states are a homestay's own, but the line between them is Meta's: anything the host sends while the guest is writing is a reply, charged at the service rate; anything the host starts later is a template. A booking made in October and reminded in December crosses that line several times.

Writing the confirmation, the reminder, the lapse note and the cancellation note once, and having each approved before the season, is most of the work. The 24-hour service window explains the rule in full.

English templates, replies in whatever the guest writes

The district site lists English and Hindi, and both are Meta template languages. Nagamese and the Naga languages are not.

Inside the 24-hour window your staff can reply in Nagamese, Angami or any language the customer uses; only templates are limited to Meta's list. InfiQ's own support team works in English and Hindi.

Questions Kohima businesses ask

  1. Q1

Our homestay near Kisama fills up for the Hornbill Festival. Can we confirm bookings and send the Dimapur pickup time on WhatsApp?

Yes. The booking confirmation and the day-before pickup reminder are utility templates at ₹0.19 per delivered message, sent to guests who booked and agreed to updates. Questions the guest asks along the way are answered freely within 24 hours of each message, at ₹0.145 per reply.

  2. Q2

We make Naga chilli pickle in Kohima and ship to buyers in Delhi and Bengaluru. Can buyers get shipping updates?

Yes. A shipping update with the courier and tracking number is a utility template at ₹0.19. If you sell through Shopify or WooCommerce, the update can be sent automatically through InfiQ's API and webhooks. A new-batch announcement is marketing and needs the buyer's opt-in.

  3. Q3

Guests often write to us in Nagamese. Can our templates be in Nagamese?

No. Nagamese is not on Meta's list of template languages, so templates go in English (en_IN or en) or Hindi (hi). Replies are not limited: inside the 24-hour window your staff can answer in Nagamese or any language the guest writes in.

  4. Q4

Students at Kohima's colleges ask our hostel about rooms before each term. Can the warden and the office answer the same number?

Yes. The shared team inbox gives 10 users on Lite and 25 on Growth, with transfers and private notes. A room confirmation or fee reminder sent later is a utility template; parents who opted in can receive it too, at ₹0.19 per delivered message.

  5. Q5

Visitors from the UK book our guided walks to the Kohima War Cemetery. What does a WhatsApp message to a UK number cost?

Meta charges by the recipient's country code, so a message to a +44 number is billed at InfiQ's published rate for the United Kingdom, shown in rupees on the pricing page. Your plan and invoice stay in rupees with GST, whichever country your guests are in.

  6. Q6

Patients come to our clinic in Kohima from Phek and Peren. Do WhatsApp reminders need DLT registration like our SMS?

No. TRAI's DLT and DND rules apply to commercial SMS and calls on telecom networks, not to WhatsApp. WhatsApp has its own rules: the patient's opt-in, Meta-approved templates and quality ratings. The India guide explains what the DPDP Act adds from May 2027.
