WhatsApp Business API for Kakching's rice sellers, fish traders and weavers

Kakching calls itself the rice basket of Manipur, and its black chakhao is the district's ODOP entry. A buyer outside the valley now often sees the grain first in a photo on WhatsApp.

For Kakching's black chakhao rice sellers and mills, Ngaton fish, pineapple and vegetable traders, and handloom weavers: how one rice order runs on WhatsApp from the first question to the dispatch notice, why templates go in English or Hindi, and what each message costs in rupees.

A chakhao order, mapped

A shop outside Manipur asks a Kakching seller for black rice. Follow the order from box to box and see which steps are replies and which need an approved template.

The first half of the map is conversation. The buyer's question opens a 24-hour window, and the photos, the price and the order confirmation are ordinary replies charged at the service rate.

The second half is not. A dispatch notice sent days later needs an approved utility template, and a new-harvest offer is marketing, sent only to buyers who asked for it. The 24-hour service window explains the rule.

Kakching in seven lines

From the Kakching district administration's pages, Invest India's ODOP list and IBEF's Manipur profile.

Kakching district came into existence on 8 December 2016, one of seven new districts the state announced, and occupies much of the south-eastern half of the Manipur valley at about 790 metres.[1]

NH-39 runs through the district towards Moreh and Tamu and is called the main lifeline of its people; IBEF describes Moreh as the only feasible land route for trade between India and Myanmar.[1],[4]

The district is called the rice basket of Manipur: rice covers above 90% of the land under cultivation, and it produced above 59,670 MT of rice in 2019–2020.[2]

Invest India's One District One Product list names black chakhao rice for Kakching.[3]

It is the largest sugarcane producer in Manipur; maize is a cash crop around Serou, Pallel and the Kakching belt, and pineapple is the main plantation crop.[2]

The Waithou, Kharung and Ikop lakes are known for Ngaton, a small fish noted for its taste.[2]

Handloom and handicraft goods are made in large volumes, largely for the Kakching market; across Manipur, handlooms are the largest cottage industry.[2],[4]

English and Hindi templates, Manipuri replies

Manipuri is not on Meta's list of template languages, so a Kakching business writes its templates in English or Hindi and answers customers in whatever language they write.

Inside the 24-hour window your staff can reply in Manipuri; replies are not templates, so no approval is involved. InfiQ's own support works in English and Hindi.

Questions Kakching businesses ask

  1. Q1

Shops outside Manipur ask our Kakching mill for black chakhao rice. Do our photo and price replies need an approved template?

No. The shop wrote first, so for 24 hours your photos, the price per bag and the order confirmation are ordinary replies at ₹0.145 each, and each new message from the shop restarts the window. Only a message you send first, or days later, needs a template.

  2. Q2

Our customers in Kakching write to us in Manipuri. Can our WhatsApp templates be in Manipuri as well?

No. Manipuri is not one of Meta's template languages. Write templates in English (en_IN) or Hindi (hi). Inside the 24-hour window your staff can reply in Manipuri, because replies are free-form and need no approval.

  3. Q3

We sell Ngaton from the Waithou and Ikop lakes at the Kakching market. Can we tell regular buyers when the day's catch comes in?

Yes, to buyers who agreed to hear from you. A catch-day notice promotes stock rather than updating an order, so it is a marketing template at ₹0.94 per delivered message. An order-ready notice for fish a buyer has already ordered is utility at ₹0.19.

  4. Q4

Our goods leave Kakching by road along NH-39. How do we tell the buyer that the consignment is on its way?

Send a utility template with the vehicle number, the date and the expected arrival at ₹0.19. When the buyer replies with a question, the 24-hour window opens and your answers cost ₹0.145 each, with no template needed.

  5. Q5

Our handloom unit makes cloth for the Kakching market, and orders come in to several weavers. Can all of us answer one number?

Yes. InfiQ's shared team inbox gives 10 users on Lite and 25 on Growth, with transfers, labels and private notes, so the shop and the weavers can answer one number without promising the same piece twice.

  6. Q6

Farmers around Serou and Pallel sell maize to our Kakching business. Can we send them the day's buying rate on WhatsApp?

If a farmer asks, the rate is a reply at ₹0.145. A rate sent to everyone without a request is not about a transaction the farmer has made, so Meta is likely to class it as marketing at ₹0.94; send it only to farmers who agreed to receive it.
