Hojai was carved out of Nagaon as a new district on 15 August 2016; its headquarters is Sankardev Nagar, about 8 km from Hojai town.[2],[3]
The district describes Hojai as known for agarwood processing and agar-product export, especially to Gulf countries, and lists agarwood distillation units among its forest-based industries.[2],[3]
Saw mills and bamboo and cane furniture units are its other forest-based industries; agriculture is the main livelihood of most of the population.[3]
The district covers 1,685 sq km with 3 revenue circles, 362 revenue villages, 5 development blocks and 4 municipal boards.[4],[1]
It has 9 railway stations and one junction, Lumding, connected to the major cities of Assam and other states.[4]
