WhatsApp Business API for Khamgaon's cotton factories, silver shops and seed dealers

Khamgaon has traded cotton since about 1820 and is Buldhana district's largest city. Its growers still wait at the weighbridge for a slip, and the slip can now reach their phone before the tractor has left the gate.

For Khamgaon's ginning and pressing factories and cotton traders, the silver and gold jewellers of its market, the seed dealers, and the cabs and lodges on the road to Shegaon: how a weighbridge slip travels from your software to a grower's phone, and what each message costs in rupees.

See it work

A Khamgaon weighbridge slip, from the software to the grower's phone

A grower unloads cotton at a ginning factory. Follow the slip as it leaves the factory's billing software, goes out as an approved template, and comes back as a question the office can answer.

The factory writes the slip template once, with spaces for the lot, the weight, the rate and the amount, and Meta approves it. After that the billing software fills the spaces for every load, and nobody types a grower's number by hand.

When the grower writes back, the question lands in the office's shared inbox, and the answer is a reply. The same API sends the bale dispatch note to the mill that bought the lint.

Khamgaon in eight lines

From the Buldhana district administration's pages, Invest India's ODOP list and, for the town's history, Wikipedia.

Buldhana district lies in the Amravati division on the western border of Vidarbha, about 500 km from Mumbai, with 13 talukas and 6 sub-divisions; it calls Khamgaon its largest city.[1]

The district borders Madhya Pradesh to the north, Akola, Washim and Amravati to the east, Jalna to the south and Jalgaon and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to the west.[1]

The Dnyanganga wildlife sanctuary lies on the Buldhana–Khamgaon State Road.[2]

At Shegaon, the Shri Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan built Anand Sagar, an artificial lake fed with water lifted from the Man river 9 km away, with a meditation centre, a hanging bridge and a mini train.[2]

Shegaon lies about 17 km north-east of Khamgaon.[4]

Khamgaon's trade in ghee, raw thread and cotton is dated to about 1820; under British rule it became a major cotton hub, and the town is also known for its silver market.[4]

The Mothi Devi Utsav, an 11-day festival to Goddess Jagdamba, begins on Sharada Purnima, and an MIDC industrial estate serves the town's factories.[4]

Invest India's One District One Product list names cotton-related products for Buldhana, with seeds for planting second.[3]

Why Khamgaon starts with the slip

In a town that has traded cotton since about 1820, the first WhatsApp message worth automating is the slip, not the sales pitch.

A cotton factory's messages are mostly records: what was weighed, at what rate, when the money will come. Those are utility messages, priced below marketing, and they are the easiest to send straight from software a factory already runs.

The silver market works the other way. A customer who asks a jeweller for photos of anklets has opened the conversation, and the photos are replies. The morning silver rate sent unasked is a different thing: an offer, and only for customers who said yes to it.
