Kapurthala district covers 1,633 sq km of the Doaba near the meeting of the Beas and the Sutlej, in four tehsils, Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi, Phagwara and Bholath, and lists Punjabi as its language.[1]
The district's history is that of the Ahluwalia dynasty, founded by Baba Jassa Singh (1718–1783) and named after the village of Ahlu near Lahore.[2]
Maharaja Jagatjit Singh came to the throne in 1877 at about five, represented India at the League of Nations in 1926, 1927 and 1929, and brought in a telephone system in 1901 and free primary education in 1918.[2]
His love of French architecture shows in the city's palaces, and the district says Kapurthala is known as the Paris of Punjab; the Jagatjit Palace, modelled on Versailles, now houses the Sainik School.[1],[2],[3]
The Moorish Mosque was completed in 1930; the Elysee Palace, built in 1962 in an Indo-French style, is now the MGN School; the Kanjli wetland was created in 1870 by headworks across the Bein.[3]
At Sultanpur Lodhi, the present Gurdwara Ber Sahib, funded by Jagatjit Singh, was dedicated on 26 January 1941.[3]
Industries were established at Hamira and Phagwara in the 1940s, and Invest India's ODOP list names diesel engines and auto parts as the district's product.[2],[6]
The Rail Coach Factory was set up in Kapurthala district in 1985, 7 km from the city, with a planned township of its own.[5]
Kapurthala lies on the Jalandhar–Ferozepur railway line and road; the nearest airport is at Amritsar, 75 km away.[4]
