A business day in Kannauj

WhatsApp Business API for Kannauj's attar houses, distilleries and incense makers

Kannauj, the itra (इत्र) capital, still makes attar by the deg-bhapka process its district is famous for. Its orders start with a question about a sample and end with a courier, and WhatsApp can carry all of it.

  1. 07:00

A distillery's utility template asks its flower suppliers to confirm today's delivery.

  2. 11:00

A perfume shop in another city asks for samples of three attars.

  3. 15:00

Bottled lots leave with a courier; each buyer gets a dispatch note.

  4. 20:00

An incense-stick maker sends a distributor the invoice for the week's cartons.

For the attar houses and deg-bhapka distilleries of Kannauj, the incense-stick makers who share its ODOP entry and the shops that sell its perfume across India and abroad: how one order runs on WhatsApp from a sample request to delivery, which steps need a template, and what each message costs.

See it work

One attar order, from a sample to the courier

A perfume shop in another city asks a Kannauj attar house for samples. Step through the order to see which messages are replies and which have to be templates.

Two of the nine steps are templates, and both are utility: the note that the order is ready and the note that it has left. Everything else is a reply to something the shop asked, which needs no approval and can be written in any language.

Distilling and bottling take time, so the window the shop opened has usually closed by the time the attar is ready. That is why the order-ready note is the one template every Kannauj attar house should have approved before its first order.

Kannauj in eight lines

From the Kannauj district administration, Uttar Pradesh's ODOP portal, the Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre and Invest India's ODOP list.

Kannauj district was carved out of Farrukhabad on 18 September 1997; it lies in Kanpur Division and covers 2,093 sq km with three tehsils, eight blocks and 752 villages.[1]

Its ancient name was Kanyakubja, or Mahodaya; Harsha held a religious assembly here, and Hiuen Tsang visited in 643.[2]

Chandradeva, the first Gahadavala king of Kannauj, ruled from 1089–90, and under Akbar Kannauj was the headquarters of a sarkar.[2]

The district calls itself the land of fragrances and says its essence, flavour and fragrance industry is famous internationally.[1],[3]

Uttar Pradesh's ODOP portal calls Kannauj the itra, or attar, capital of India, made by the age-old deg-bhapka distillation process from flowers, herbs, spices and aromatic woods, and calls it a GI-tagged craft.[4]

The same portal says Kannauj's attars serve domestic and international markets, and its incense sticks and dhoopbatti are made from natural resins, essential oils, herbs, wood powders and floral extracts.[4]

Invest India's ODOP list names perfume (attar), incense sticks and products for Kannauj.[6]

The Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre was set up in 1991 and is an autonomous body under the Ministry of MSME, with training courses and a NABL-accredited testing laboratory.[5]

Who in Kannauj starts first

Four businesses that follow from the stills, the incense units and the shops that sell what they make.

Attar houses

Attar made by deg-bhapka distillation sells in domestic and international markets, and a new buyer often asks for samples first.[4]

  • Sample photos and prices in reply
  • Order-ready note with the invoice
  • Dispatch note with tracking

Distilleries and their suppliers

Flowers, herbs, spices and aromatic woods are the stills' raw materials, bought from growers and suppliers.[4]

  • Delivery confirmation to a supplier
  • Weight and payment note
  • Answers to suppliers who write in

Incense-stick and dhoopbatti makers

Incense sticks share Kannauj's ODOP entry with attar, and sell to distributors and shops.[6],[4]

  • Order confirmations to distributors
  • Invoices and payment reminders
  • New fragrances to buyers who opted in

Perfume shops and online sellers

A shop that sells attar to visitors, or online, is asked to reorder long after the first sale.

  • Reorder answers in reply
  • Order and courier updates
  • Seasonal offers to customers who opted in

A slow product and a 24-hour window

Attar from traditional deg-bhapka stills is not always a product a house can ship the same day. A buyer's first question and the moment his lot is distilled and bottled can be days apart.

WhatsApp's window is 24 hours. Inside it, the house can answer anything the buyer asks: photos, prices, which attar suits which season. When the lot is ready, the buyer has long gone quiet, so the order-ready note goes as an approved utility template, written once in Hindi or English with variables for the attar, the quantity and the invoice.

Selling more to the same buyer is different again. A note about a new attar or a festival price is marketing, and it goes only to buyers who said yes to hearing about offers.

Questions Kannauj businesses ask

Perfume shops ask our Kannauj attar house for photos and prices of samples before they order. Is what we send back marketing?+
No. The shop asked, so the photos, the prices and your suggestions are replies at ₹0.145 each for 24 hours after its last message, with no template. Marketing is a message you start about offers, sent only to buyers who agreed to receive it.
Our Kannauj distillery buys flowers from suppliers through the season. Can each supplier get the weight and payment note for the day's delivery on WhatsApp?+
Yes. A weight or payment note for flowers the supplier delivered is a utility template at ₹0.19, approved in Hindi, with the date, the weight and the amount as variables. When a supplier writes back, your answers are replies at ₹0.145.
The ODOP portal calls Kannauj attar a GI-tagged craft, and buyers abroad ask us about it. What does a message to an overseas buyer cost?+
Each message is billed at the rate for the buyer's country code, not India's. InfiQ publishes every market's rate in rupees on the [pricing page](/pricing) and invoices in rupees with GST to your Uttar Pradesh GSTIN, so there is no foreign-currency bill.
Our incense-stick unit in Kannauj supplies distributors across Uttar Pradesh. Can invoices and payment reminders go out on WhatsApp by themselves?+
Yes. If you bill in Busy, InfiQ's native Busy integration sends invoices and automatic payment reminders on WhatsApp with no integration fee. Each reminder to a distributor's Indian number is a utility message at ₹0.19.
Visitors who bought attar at our Kannauj shop want to reorder later. Can we send them our new attars before Diwali?+
Only those who agreed to hear about new attars and offers. A seasonal offer is a marketing template at ₹0.94, and InfiQ records each customer's opt-in with its date and source and enforces STOP. A customer who writes to reorder gets every answer as a reply.
Our Kannauj shop sells attar vials online across India. Can order and courier updates come from our website without staff typing them?+
Yes. Your site or order system can call InfiQ's REST API to send the order confirmation and the courier update as utility templates at ₹0.19 each, and signed webhooks report delivery back. The API is included on Growth and is an add-on on Lite.
