Mainpuri town is the headquarters of a district in the Agra division, bounded by Etah to the north, Farrukhabad and Kannauj to the east, Etawah to the south and Firozabad and Etah to the west. The 2011 census counted 2,131,171 people in the district.[1]
The area once formed part of the kingdom of Kanauj, with Rapri and Bhongaon its chief principalities after that kingdom fell. It passed to the Mughals in 1526, later to the Marathas and Oudh, and was ceded to the British in 1801.[2]
From 1801 Mainpuri town was headquarters of the large Etawah district; Etah and Mainpuri became separate collectorates in 1856, and the regiment at Mainpuri rose in 1857.[2]
Invest India's ODOP list names tarkashi art as Mainpuri's primary product, textile sewing its second and zari zardozi its third.[5]
The state ODOP portal describes tarkashi as fine brass or copper wire inlaid into wood, notes its GI tag, and lists a functional common facility centre run by the Santoshima Tarakashi Handicraft Association.[4]
The district's handicraft page lists ODOP support for tarkashi, from loans and toolkits to training and a marketing incentive for taking part in fairs.[3]
