Kamareddy district was formed on 11 October 2016, bifurcated from Nizamabad, with three revenue divisions (Kamareddy, Banswada and Yellareddy) and 22 mandals; it now lists 25 mandals and 532 villages.[2],[1]
It borders Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Siddipet and Medak districts, and Nanded in Maharashtra and Bidar in Karnataka to the west.[2]
The district is named after Chinna Kamireddy, ruler of Domakonda Fort around 1600 to 1640; its former name was Koduru.[1]
The Manjira's waters irrigate the district through the Nizamsagar dam near Achampet, and sugarcane is one of its major crops.[2]
Two sugar factories operate, at Adloor Yellareddy in Sadashivnagar mandal and at Magi in Nizamsagar mandal, the second also generating power.[3]
Madnoor mandal has many cotton ginning and pressing units, and the district counts 192 small-scale industrial units.[3]
Bhiknoor and Kamareddy mandals draw large and medium industry because they are close to Hyderabad; Bhiknoor already has granite, chemical and ferro-alloy units.[3]
Forests cover 82,190.48 hectares, 22.43% of the district, and beedi rolling is a household industry.[2]
