Kairana's name reached Karnataka and Maharashtra through its singers; its shops still sell to the next village and the far bank of the Yamuna.
Most people who know the word Kirana know it from music, not from the town. For a business in Kairana that makes little difference. Its customers are the households of the tehsil, buyers from Shamli and Kandhla, and people who cross the Yamuna from Haryana along the Panipat road.
What they share is a habit of writing to a shop before they visit it. WhatsApp's rules fit that well: when a customer writes first, every answer for the next 24 hours is an ordinary reply, in any language and without approval. Only the messages a shop starts, the order-ready note or the payment reminder, have to be templates.
