Jagdalpur is the headquarters of both Bastar district and Bastar division. The district covers 6,596.90 sq km in seven tehsils and 595 villages, with 8,34,375 people at the 2011 census.[1]
About 70% of the district's people belong to tribal communities, among them Gond, Maria, Muria, Bhatra, Halba and Dhurwa; the district site lists Hindi and Halbi as its languages.[1]
The district's economy page (last updated 2018) calls agriculture and forest produce its two pillars, with paddy on about 2.39 lakh hectares and only 1.67% of the area irrigated.[2]
Forest produce collected and sold in the district includes kosa silk, tendu leaf, lac, dhoop, sal seed, tamarind, amchur and medicinal herbs.[2]
The ODOP list names bell metal (Dhokra) as Bastar's primary product and tamarind as its secondary one.[4]
Tirathgarh falls, 35 km from Jagdalpur, drop about 300 feet on the Munagabahar; the district calls Chitrakote the Niagara of India, and the Kutumsar caves close in monsoon floods.[3],[1]
IBEF puts Chhattisgarh's GSDP at Rs 6.31 trillion in 2025-26 and its share of India's mineral production by value at 13.40% in FY26, and lists Rs 80 crore in FY27 for airport works at Bilaspur, Ambikapur and Jagdalpur.[5]
