Hingoli in eight lines
From the Hingoli district website's about, turmeric and tourism pages, Invest India's ODOP list and IBEF's Maharashtra profile.
Hingoli district was created on 1 May 1999 by dividing Parbhani district. It lies in northern Marathwada, bordered by Akola and Yavatmal to the north, Parbhani to the west and Nanded to the south-east.[1]
The district covers 4,526 sq km in three subdivisions, Hingoli, Kalamnuri and Basmat, and five talukas, Hingoli, Kalamnuri, Basmat, Aundha and Sengaon.[1]
The district site lists Marathi, Hindi and Urdu as its languages, Gondhal, Shahiri, Bharud, Potraj and Kalgitura among its folk arts, and jowar and cotton as its main crops.[1]
Hingoli has its own railway station; Parbhani, about 80 km by road, is the larger station with direct trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and the nearest airport is Aurangabad.[1]
Invest India's ODOP list names turmeric as Hingoli's primary product and soybean and soybean-based products as its secondary one.[4]
The Balasaheb Thackeray Haridra Research and Training Center was established in October 2022 and grows 36 turmeric varieties, among them Salem, Pratibha and Phule Swaroopa; it proposed the GI registration.[2]
Vasmat Haldi was granted its GI tag on 30 March 2024, with the registration valid until October 2031.[2]
Narsi, in the district, is the birthplace of Sant Namdev, born in 1270; Aundha Nagnath is one of the jyotirlinga temples, and the Mallinath Digambar Jain temple stands at Shirad Shahapur in Aundha Nagnath taluka.[3]
