WhatsApp Business API for Bhadrak's rice mills, harbours and Odia-speaking buyers

Bhadrak is said to take its name from Bhadrakali, and it has been a district of its own since 1993. Its fields grow paddy and its harbours land fish, and its buyers read Odia, a language Meta does not yet take for templates.

Trade 1

Paddy and rice mills

Paddy grows on 94% of the district's cultivable land in kharif, and rice is its ODOP product.

Trade 2

Fishing harbours

Dhamara, Kasia and Chudamani land the catch along the coast from Chandabali to Basudevpur.

English and Hindi; replies in Odia

For Bhadrak's rice mills and grain traders, the fish traders of Dhamara, Kasia and Chudamani, and the lodges near Aradi and the Bhadrakali temple: how to send a dispatch or payment notice when Meta accepts no Odia templates, how to answer in Odia afterwards, and what each message costs in rupees.

See it work

An English template, an Odia conversation

A Bhadrak rice mill tells a trader his order has left the mill. The template has to be in English or Hindi; the moment the trader writes back in Odia, the mill can answer him in Odia.

Meta approves templates only in the languages on its list, and Odia is not one of them. So the first message a Bhadrak business sends, a dispatch notice, a payment receipt or a booking confirmation, is written in English or Hindi. Plain English with the order number and the date reads well to most traders.

Once the trader replies, the conversation is his. For 24 hours after his last message the mill can answer in Odia, send the driver's number or a photo of the loaded truck, all as service replies. The 24-hour service window explains the rule.

One dispatch notice, then the trader's own language

Bhadrak in seven lines

From the Bhadrak district administration's history, economy and tourism pages, Invest India's ODOP list and IBEF's Odisha profile.

Bhadrak is presumed to be named after its presiding deity, Bhadrakali; it became a district on 1 April 1993, when its sub-division was separated from undivided Balasore.[1]

The district covers 2,505 sq km in northern Odisha, between Balasore to the north, Jajpur and the Baitarani to the south, Keonjhar to the west and the Bay of Bengal and Kendrapada to the east.[1]

The district page calls Bhadrak agrarian to the core; paddy is the main kharif crop, grown on 94% of the cultivable area, and the East Coast Railway through the town has long made it a trade centre.[1],[2]

People along the coast from Dhamara in Chandabali block to Padhuan in Basudevpur block live by fishing, and the major fishing harbours are at Dhamara, Kasia and Chudamani.[2]

Invest India's One District One Product list names rice as Bhadrak's primary product and fish as its secondary one, and IBEF counts marine products among Odisha's major exports.[4],[5]

The district page names FACOR's ferro chrome plant as its large industry, beside rice mills, ice factories and other small units promoted by the District Industries Centre.[2]

Akhandalamani's Shiva temple at Aradi stands on the Baitarani, the Biranchinarayan temple at Palia is 15 km south of the town, and Eram, remembered as Raktatirtha, lies by the sea near Basudebpur.[3]

Industries

Who in Bhadrak sends the first message

Four kinds of business in the town and along its coast, and the messages each sends most.

  1. 01

    Rice mills and grain traders

Rice is the district's primary ODOP product, and paddy fills almost all its cultivable land in kharif, so mills deal with farmers before the harvest and traders after it.[4],[2]

On WhatsApp: Dispatch notices with the invoice · Payment receipts to farmers and traders · Photos of a lot in reply to a buyer

  2. 02

    Fish traders at the harbours

Fish is the district's second ODOP product, landed at Dhamara, Kasia and Chudamani and sold on to buyers who want to know what came in and when it leaves.[4],[2]

On WhatsApp: Catch photos and prices in reply · Loading and dispatch updates · Offers to buyers who opted in

  3. 03

    Temple-town lodges and taxis

Devotees come for Bhadrakali, for Akhandalamani at Aradi and for the Biranchinarayan temple at Palia, and they ask about rooms and cars before they travel.[3]

On WhatsApp: Room and car confirmations · Directions and timings in reply · Pre-arrival notes

  4. 04

Suppliers to the ferro chrome plant

FACOR's plant is the district's large industry, and the workshops and transporters around it run on job orders and delivery slots.[2]

On WhatsApp: Job-status updates from the order system · Delivery-slot confirmations · Invoice and payment reminders

Templates in English or Hindi, conversations in Odia

Meta approves each template once per language, and only in the languages on its list. Odia is not on it, so a Bhadrak business writes its templates in English or Hindi.

Keep template wording short and plain so it reads well to someone whose first language is Odia: the order number, the date, the amount and a button. Then answer in Odia, by hand or with saved replies, inside the window.

Inside the 24-hour window your staff can reply in any language, Odia included. InfiQ's own support works in English and Hindi.
