Amreli takes its name from the headquarters town; an inscribed stone at the Nagnath temple suggests it was once called Amravaali.[2]
The Maratha commander Damajirao Gaikwad came to Amreli in 1730 and set up military bases at Amreli and Lathi in 1742–43. The area stayed in Vadodara State until 1949, joined Bombay State in 1956 and Gujarat on 1 May 1960.[2]
The district covers 6,760 sq km in 11 blocks, with 615 villages and 10 municipalities; its site gives a population of 15,14,190 and literacy of 74.25%.[1]
Its soils range from medium black and loamy to sandy and saline, mainly under groundnut, cotton, sesame, bajri, wheat and gram; Jafrabad and Rajula are its two coastal talukas.[4]
Pipavav port, in Rajula taluka about 100 km from Amreli, is linked to Mumbai by rail with double-decker container trains.[3]
The Gir Lion Sanctuary covers 379.9 sq km of the Dhari, Khambha and Savarkundla talukas; the Khodiyar dam, built in 1967 on the Shetrunji, the district's largest river, holds 32 million cubic metres.[3]
The district's Human Development Plan calls for a centre of excellence in the diamond industry to make Amreli a diamond zone, and points to Pipavav port's potential for the area around it.[4]

Ambardi Safari Park at Dhari, the Gir sanctuary, the Bhurakhiya Hanuman temple at Lathi and the Gaikwads' Rajmahel in Amreli draw visitors.[1],[3]
