The district calls itself the Land of River Devika and is named after Raja Udham Singh; Udhampur town, its headquarters, stands at 756 m.[1],[3],[2],[4]
It counts 2,380 sq km, 1,042.06 of them under forest, and 5,57,689 people at the 2011 census, with four towns: Udhampur, Ramnagar, Chenani and Kud.[2]
Udhampur is the Northern Command headquarters of the Indian Army, has a Forward Base Support Unit of the Indian Air Force, and is a transit point on NH 44.[3]
The Kiramchi temples stand on the Udhampur–Jammu highway; the district also lists Ramnagar Fort, Mansar Lake, Patnitop, Sudh Mahadev and the Chenani–Nashri tunnel among its sights.[3],[1],[4]
Udhampur station (UHP) has regular trains; Jammu airport is 65 km away and Srinagar airport 229 km.[5]
