Tanuku had a sugar factory before it had a municipality: The Andhra Sugars began operations there in 1952, and the town was constituted in 1979. Its mills and ponds trade with buyers who already ask for rates and pickup times on WhatsApp.
For Tanuku's rice and oil mills, the aqua farms and prawn processors of West Godavari, poultry traders and the town's colleges: which WhatsApp messages are pond-side updates and payment notes, which are promotions that need a buyer's yes, and what each costs in rupees.

Tanuku and West Godavari, sourced

West Godavari district, carved out of part of the old district, has its headquarters at Bhimavaram and 20 mandals; its farming depends on the Godavari Western Delta irrigation system.[1]
Tanuku is in West Godavari district and the Gosthani river flows through it. The municipality was constituted in 1979, became first grade in 2002 and selection grade in 2025.[9]
The Andhra Sugars Limited was incorporated on 11 August 1947, gives its address as Venkatarayapuram, Tanuku, and began sugar operations at Tanuku in 1952. Its products span sugars, chemicals and fertilisers, and pharma.[2]
The company also lists sites at Kovvur, Taduvai, Saggonda, Bhimadole and Parawada.[2]
Rice mills, oil mills, textiles, paper, aquaculture and poultry are the trades the town has historically been associated with.[9]
The ODOP list names processed prawn and shrimp, Veemavaram light-weight sarees, crochet lace and Narsapur crochet laces as West Godavari's products.[3]
IBEF says Andhra Pradesh produced 4.13 million tonnes of fish and prawn in 2024-25, and puts the state's marine product exports at about Rs. 30,275 crore in FY26.[4]
Tanuku station is in the Vijayawada railway division, APSRTC runs buses from the town's bus station, and Rajahmundry has the nearest airport.[9]
