Sehore stands in the foothills of the Vindhyachal range in the Malwa region; the district's rivers include the Narmada, the Parwati, the Newaj, the Kolar and the Seewan.[2]
Its old name was Sidhhapur; a rock edict found on the Seewan river suggests the name came from Sidrapur.[2]
