Samastipur became a district in 1972 when it was split from Darbhanga district; it has 4 subdivisions, 20 blocks, 8 municipalities and 346 panchayats.[1],[2]
The district's history page says the subdivision, originally Shamsuddinpur, was founded by Hazi Shamsuddin Ilyas, and names Vidyapati among the scholars of the Oinwara dynasty's age, 1325 to 1525.[2]
Tobacco, maize, rice and wheat are the district's main crops, litchi and mango are grown in abundance, and the district calls itself a major producer of potatoes, with cold storages that all store potatoes.[3]
The district names its sugar mills and the Rameshwar Jute Mill at Muktapur village among its industries.[3]
Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University at Pusa, about 20 km west of the headquarters, has its roots in an institute founded in 1905 and is known as a birthplace of agricultural research in India.[4]
Khudneshwar Asthan, a Shiva temple about 17 km south-west, is named for a Muslim woman, Khudni, linked to its discovery, and draws crowds at Maha Shivratri and in Shravan.[4]
