Neemuch, in the Malwa region on Madhya Pradesh's border with Rajasthan, was declared an independent district on 30 June 1998; until then it was part of Mandsaur.[1],[2]

The town grew as a large British cantonment of Gwalior State; Bengal troops stationed there rose in 1857 and marched towards Delhi.[2]

It became headquarters of the Malwa Agency in 1895, and the British cantonment was dissolved in 1932.[2]
