Medinipur, from the district and the record

Paschim Medinipur was founded on 1 January 2002, when the old Midnapore district was split into Paschim and Purba Medinipur.[1]
One account traces the town's name to a local deity, Medinimata, mother of the world; the Midnapore district came under the East India Company in 1760.[2]
The district describes a western sal forest and older village settlements to the east, the Jungle Mahal's history of the Chuar and Santal rebellions, and Patachitra and Madur craft as living traditions.[3]
Medinipur stands on the Kangsabati, or Kasai, 13 km from Kharagpur, on the Kharagpur–Bankura–Adra line, with local trains to Howrah.[5]
Midnapore College grew out of the Midnapur Collegiate School in 1873; Vidyasagar University is on the town's western side, and the Midnapore Medical College admitted MBBS students from 2005–06.[5]
The Collegiate School was a centre of the freedom movement, and Khudiram Bose was first arrested in Midnapore in 1906; the Karnagarh temples stand about 10 km north of the town.[5]
