Jhargram district was formed on 4 April 2017 out of Paschim Medinipur, as West Bengal's 22nd district, with its headquarters at Jhargram.[1]
At the 2011 Census its area had 1,136,548 residents, 96.52% of them rural and 29.37% from Scheduled Tribes, across one subdivision, eight blocks and 79 gram panchayats.[2]
Purulia and Bankura lie to the north, Odisha to the south and Jharkhand to the west; the Kangsabati and, in part, the Subarnarekha form its eastern edge.[2]
The Chota Nagpur plateau slopes down here into laterite soil, and the district describes the whole area as drought-prone.[2]
Jhargram lies on the Kolkata–Mumbai main line of the South Eastern Railway, about 15 km from National Highway 6 and about 200 km from Kolkata.[2]
Gopiballavpur's eco-tourism park on the Subarnarekha is 38 km from the town, Hatibari sits where West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand meet, and the Kanak Durga temple at Chilkigarh is put at more than 500 years old.[3]
