Meerut district covers 2,590 sq km with three tehsils, 12 blocks and 662 villages, lists Hindi as its language, and is famous as the starting point of the 1857 rebellion.[1]
Nagar Palika Parishad Mawana stands near the tehsil office in Mawana, and the district lists it with Sardhana among its municipal councils.[2]
The town's name is said to come from Muhana, gateway, as the gateway of the Hastinapur kingdom; NH-34 links Meerut to Mawana and runs on to Bijnor, and the Ganga flows a short way off.[7]
UP Tourism describes Hastinapur as the capital of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata, with Vidur Tila, the Pandaveshwar temple and the Baradri among its sites.[4]
Its Jain sites include the Jambudweep Jain temple, a Shwetambar temple and the old Digambar Jain temple, the oldest in Hastinapur, under whose aegis the Kailash Parvat structure was built.[4]
Parikshitgarh, also in the district, takes its name from Parikshit, King of Hastinapur.[3]
