Komarapalayam was raised from a town panchayat to a municipality in 1978 and to first grade in 1990. It covers 7.10 sq km in 33 wards.[5]
It is one of the eight taluks of Namakkal district, which was formed from Salem and has functioned since 1 January 1997.[2]
Namakkal district covers 3,368.21 sq km and had 17,26,601 residents at the 2011 Census, with 5 municipalities and 19 town panchayats.[2]
The district's website calls it the land of poultry and transport, and names poultry, power looms and lorry body building as its highlights.[1]
Nearly 37 spinning mills and more than 10,000 power looms work in the Tiruchengode area, which is also known for borewell rigs, more than 2,000 of them working across India.[3]
Namakkal has had more than 150 lorry body building workshops since the 1960s and is called the Egg City for its poultry.[3]

Across the Cauvery in Erode district, Bhavani is a handloom centre with dye works, and its Sangameswarar temple stands where the Bhavani river joins the Cauvery.[6]
