The district was carved out of the erstwhile Khammam district and borders Bhoopalapalle, Mahabubabad and Khammam districts and the states of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.[1],[2]
It covers 7,483 sq km in 23 mandals and two revenue divisions, Kothagudem and Bhadrachalam, with headquarters at Kothagudem.[1]
The Singareni Collieries Company, a coal company jointly owned by the governments of Telangana and India, is headquartered in Kothagudem.[2]
TSGENCO's coal-based Kothagudem Thermal Power Station is at Palvoncha, and ITC's paperboards and specialty papers division is at Sarapaka near Bhadrachalam.[2]
The district has the largest area under forests in Telangana; its forest produce includes teak, bamboo, eucalyptus, beedi leaves, honey, tamarind and nux vomica.[2]
Bhadrachalam, a temple town on the Godavari, is home to the Sri Seetha Ramachandra Swamy Devasthanam; Parnasala lies 32 km away.[1],[3]
Kakatiya University's engineering college at Kothagudem, formerly the Kothagudem School of Mines, was Telangana's first mining college.[2]
Kothagudem is served by Bhadrachalam Road railway station and by bus depots at Kothagudem and Bhadrachalam.[2]

The coal company, the thermal power station, the paperboard unit and Nava Bharat's ferro alloys plant at Palwancha keep spares, services and contractors in demand.[2],[1]

Tamarind, honey, beedi leaves and bamboo come from forests across Bhadrachalam, Manuguru, Kothagudem and Yellandu.[2]
The district says the temple draws lakhs of devotees; Parnasala, 32 km away, and the Kinnerasani wildlife sanctuary near Palvancha are close by.[3]
