The capital, from its own district pages
From the Itanagar Capital Complex and Papum Pare district websites and IBEF's Arunachal Pradesh profile.
The Deputy Commissioner (Capital) covers Itanagar, Naharlagun and Banderdewa: 200 sq km in 3 circles, with 105 villages and 6 police stations. Government departments sit in Naharlagun as well as Itanagar.[2],[1]
Papum Pare district, created in 1992 out of Lower Subansiri, contains the Capital Complex; its headquarters moved from Itanagar to Yupia in 2000.[4]
Papum Pare's people are mainly Nyishi, the district says, except in the capital, whose residents come from across the country, government officials and businesspeople among them. Nyokum Yullo is the district's main festival.[4]
Hindi, Assamese, Bengali and English are the main languages spoken in the town.[2]
Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi is about 27 km south of the city, with flights from Kolkata; Naharlagun station, about 15 km away, has trains to New Delhi and Guwahati, and buses come in over NH-415.[3]
Visitors who are not natives of Arunachal Pradesh need an Inner Line Permit, applied for online or at the Resident Commissioner's offices; foreigners need a Restricted Area Permit.[3]
IBEF puts Arunachal's GSDP at ₹495.06 billion in FY26 and calls the state India's largest kiwi producer and second-largest producer of large cardamom. An aerocity is planned near Donyi Polo Airport, and a convention centre with a 100–150 room hotel was announced at Hollongi in March 2026.[5]
