Harihar takes its name from Hari and Hara together and stands where the Tungabhadra marks the edge of Davanagere district. The broad-gauge line that serves its twin, Davanagere, runs through the town, and so does NH 48.

Davanagere district was carved out of Chitradurga, Shimoga and Bellary districts on 15 August 1997; the Tungabhadra forms its natural boundary at Harihara.[2]
