Bhadohi district, run from Gyanpur
From the Bhadohi district administration's home, history and economy pages, Invest India's ODOP list and Uttar Pradesh's ODOP portal.
Bhadohi was created on 30 June 1994 as the 65th district of Uttar Pradesh; before that it was part of Varanasi district.[2]
The district covers 1,015 sq km in the Ganga plains, with 3 tehsils and 6 blocks; it borders Jaunpur, Varanasi, Mirzapur and Allahabad, and the Ganga forms its south-western border.[1]
Its name is traced to Bhar Raj, whose capital was Bhadohi; under Akbar it was a dastur in the sarkar of Allahabad, and in 1911 it came under the Maharaja of Benares.[2]
The district dates its carpet weaving to the 16th century, under Akbar; the GI tag for handmade carpets covers nine districts, from Bhadohi and Mirzapur to Varanasi and Jaunpur.[3]
Cotton dhurry, Chhapra Mir, Loribaft and Indo Gabbeh are among the carpet types the district names.[3]
Uttar Pradesh's ODOP portal calls the district one of India's most important centres of handwoven carpets, made by hand-knotting and handweaving, with strong export links.[4]
Baba Harihar Nath and Baba Doodhnath in Gyanpur, and Sita Samahit Sthal at Sitamarhi, are among the district's religious sites.[1]
