Gadag (ಗದಗ) and its sister town Betageri share one city administration, and between them print wedding cards, weave saris and trade chillies. Each starts the same way now: a customer writes first on WhatsApp.

A press prints a QR code on wedding cards, visiting cards and saree tags; scanning it opens WhatsApp with the business's number and a first line already typed. Pick an example to see the link it makes.
A link the customer chooses to tap is the simplest opt-in to a conversation: they write first, which opens a 24-hour window in which every reply is free-form and charged at the service rate.
The reference tag at the end, [ref:saree-tag] or [ref:apmc], tells the team which printed piece started the chat. Customers can edit the text before sending, so treat the tag as a hint. From a number and a first line to a wa.me link
A wa.me link opens a WhatsApp chat with a number, optionally with a pre-filled message.

Gadag in seven lines

Gadag emerged as a new district on 24 August 1997. It covers 4,657 sq km in 7 taluks, 322 villages and 9 municipalities, lists a population of 10,64,570 and names Kannada as its language.[1],[2]
Gadag is the district headquarters, and its sister city Betageri shares a combined city administration with it; Betageri is known for its handlooms, and a powerloom MSME cluster works in the district.[3]
The district counts many printing presses in Gadag, among them Hombali Brothers and the Shabadi Math Printing Press.[3]
Onion, chilli, cotton, groundnut and sunflower are among its crops, and its APMC yard at Betageri has warehouse capacity of 7,004 tonnes.[3]
The district lists 8,088 small-scale industries, about 40% of them in agriculture and food processing.[3]
Gadag was Kumaravyasa's place of work; the Veeranarayana and Trikuteshwara temples share a trust with the Jumma Masjid; Attimabbe built temples at Lakkundi, including the Brahma Jinalaya; and Bhimsen Joshi and Puttaraja Gawai are among the district's musicians.[2]
