A business day in Emmiganur

WhatsApp Business API for Emmiganur's weavers and handloom sellers

Emmiganur has woven cotton on handlooms since long before its weavers' society was founded in 1938. Its cloth now sells through APCO, the marketplaces and GeM, but a boutique's first question still arrives as a message asking for photos.

  1. 06:30

Hanks of cotton yarn go into the boil before the looms start.

  2. 10:00

A Hyderabad linen shop asks the society for photos of checked double bedsheets.

  3. 11:30

On a Monday, the cloth goes up at the mini exhibition at the Kurnool Collectorate.

  4. 16:00

A wholesale buyer's lungis are packed and the dispatch note goes out with the invoice.

  5. 19:00

The office answers the day's last questions about towels and dhotis.

For Emmiganur's weavers' society, the handloom weavers of the Yemmiganur cluster and the sellers and exporters who carry their bedsheets, towels and lungis: how the official WhatsApp Business API handles a buyer's photo request and the dispatch note after it, which messages need a Telugu template, and what each costs in rupees.

A boutique's order for Emmiganur bedsheets

A linen shop in Hyderabad writes to a weavers' society in Emmiganur. Play the conversation: the photos and prices are replies to a buyer who wrote first; the dispatch note three days later is a template the society starts.

Most of a society office's WhatsApp day is the first half of this chat: someone asks about a check, a colour or a size, and the office answers. Those answers are free-form because the buyer started the conversation; the 24-hour service window explains how long that lasts.

The dispatch note is the society's own message, so it must be an approved template, and it goes only to a buyer who asked for it. Note the date of her request with the order.

A utility template, approved once in Telugu and once in English, billed at the utility rate for a +91 number.

A pre-approved template with header, body, footer and buttons — the only way to message a customer outside the 24-hour window.

The first four messages fall inside the buyer's 24-hour window and need no template. The dispatch note goes after the window has closed, so it is a utility template, approved in advance and sent only because the buyer asked for updates.

Four kinds of seller, from the Kurnool district's own page on Yemmiganur handloom.

Emmiganur and Kurnool in nine lines

From Kurnool district's website and its ODOP page on Yemmiganur handloom, Invest India's ODOP list, IBEF's Andhra Pradesh profile and, for the town's history, its Wikipedia entry.

After the drought of the 1930s, Machani Somappa founded the Yemmiganur Weavers' Co-operative Production and Sale Society in 1938; its name became a brand for durable handloom cloth.[2]

The district's ODOP page counts around 2,000 handloom weavers in the region, working cotton yarn in both warp and weft.[2]

Products include bedsheets, towels, lungis, handkerchiefs, mosquito nets, shirting, dhotis and sarees; yarn bought in hanks is boiled, dyed or bleached and wound before weaving.[2]

Sales run through APCO, Amazon, Flipkart, Gocoop, GeM and ONDC, a mini exhibition at the Kurnool Collectorate every Monday, and exhibitions on 15 August and 26 January.[2]

The district has signed agreements with NIFT Hyderabad (15 July 2023), IIHT Venkatagiri and NID Andhra Pradesh for design, skills and standards.[2]

Yemmiganuru bedsheets are on Invest India's ODOP list for Kurnool, beside Kodumuru Gadwal sarees and stone carved products.[3]

Kurnool district had 22,71,686 people at the 2011 Census, in 3 revenue divisions and 27 mandals; Kurnool was the capital of Andhra Pradesh from 1 October 1953 to 1 November 1956.[1]

Yemmiganur is in the Adoni revenue division; its panchayat became a municipality in 1965.[5]

IBEF counts textile and leather among Andhra Pradesh's key industries.[4]

Questions Emmiganur businesses ask

Our weavers' society in Emmiganur sells on APCO, Amazon and Flipkart as well. Can WhatsApp take over those orders?
No, and it does not need to. Marketplace orders stay on the marketplace and its own messages. WhatsApp carries the buyers who deal with you directly: boutiques, wholesalers and repeat customers who wrote to you or agreed to updates. One shared inbox number can serve all of them.
Visitors at the Monday exhibition at the Kurnool Collectorate ask us to send new bedsheet designs. What kind of message is that?
News of designs a visitor has not ordered is a marketing template at ₹0.94, and it may go only to people who agreed to it. Keep a sign-up at the stall, note the date of each yes, and send to that list only. A note about something they did order is utility.
We export Yemmiganur towels through HEPC in Chennai. How is a message to an importer abroad charged?
Meta charges by the recipient's country code, so an importer in Europe or the Gulf is billed at that market's rate, published in rupees on the pricing page. A shipment note about their own order is a utility template; a new-range message is marketing and needs their opt-in.
A Hyderabad boutique asks for photos of Emmiganur lungis and dhotis before ordering. What do our photo replies cost?
When the boutique writes first, every reply your staff send for the next 24 hours, photos included, is a service message at ₹0.145, with no template needed. If the boutique goes quiet and you write again after the window closes, that message must be an approved template.
Weavers in the Yemmiganur cluster already send loom photos from the WhatsApp Business app. Do they have to stop using it?
No. With WhatsApp Coexistence the app keeps working on the same number while the API runs beside it, within Meta's limits, so a weaver can keep chatting from the phone while dispatch notes go out as templates. Start with a 7-day Lite trial, no card needed.
Shops in Ballari across the Karnataka border order our cotton bedsheets. Can a dispatch note reach them in Kannada?
Yes. Kannada (kn) is one of the languages Meta approves templates in, so the same dispatch note can be approved in Kannada as well as Telugu and English, and each shop gets the version it reads. Each delivered note is a utility message at ₹0.19.
