Dharmapuri in eight lines

Dharmapuri became a Third Grade municipality on 14 February 1964, Second Grade in 1971, First Grade in 1987, Selection Grade in 2008 and Special Grade in 2019; it covers 11.65 sq km.[1]
The district was formed from Salem on 2 October 1965 with the Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Harur taluks, and divided on 9 February 2004 into Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri.[2]
It borders Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram to the east, Karnataka to the west, Krishnagiri to the north and Salem to the south; the Cauvery, Chinnar and Vaniyar are its main rivers.[2]
The Salem–Bangalore and Chennai–Coimbatore broad-gauge lines run through the district, and the district lists NH-7, NH-46 (Chennai–Bangalore) and NH-66 (Pondicherry–Bangalore) among its roads.[2]
Hogenakkal, 46 km from Dharmapuri on the Karnataka border, is where the Cauvery enters Tamil Nadu; its Kannada name means 'smoky rocks', and visitors ride round country boats called parisal.[3]

The town is about 64 km from Salem, 57 km from Krishnagiri and 126 km from Bangalore, on the Bengaluru–Dharmapuri–Salem railway line.[5]
