WhatsApp Business API for Indian exporters with buyers in Christchurch

The India–New Zealand trade deal takes effect on 20 October 2026. In Christchurch, the first thing it changes is the quote.

The India–New Zealand free trade agreement enters into force on 20 October 2026, removing duty on Indian exports. Christchurch buyers will hear from Indian suppliers; on WhatsApp, each step needs its own yes.

For Indian exporters quoting Canterbury buyers as the India–New Zealand FTA takes effect, Indian importers of New Zealand wool, wood and fruit, and counsellors of Indian students in the city: how a Christchurch contact climbs from a business card to a repeat buyer on WhatsApp, and what each +64 message costs.

The agreement, the trade and Christchurch

From the High Commission of India in Wellington, whose jurisdiction includes Canterbury, and from Lyttelton Port Company and ChristchurchNZ.

The India–New Zealand free trade agreement was concluded on 22 December 2025, signed in New Delhi on 27 April 2026, and enters into force on 20 October 2026.[2],[1]

It removes duty on 100% of Indian exports from entry into force, and eliminates or reduces tariffs on 95% of New Zealand's exports to India.[2]

In the year to March 2026, New Zealand exported $1.21 billion of goods and services to India and imported $1.03 billion, Statistics NZ figures show; India's main exports to New Zealand are pharmaceuticals, machinery, textile articles and electrical equipment.[2]

The 2023 census counted 292,092 people of Indian ethnicity in New Zealand, and about 12,800 Indian students are studying there.[2]

Christchurch hosted the India–New Zealand track 1.5 dialogue on 30–31 January 2025, and the Indian Army sailing vessel Triveni called at Lyttelton in December 2025.[2]

Lyttelton, the largest port in the South Island, handled more than $15.4 billion of two-way trade in FY26, with inland links to CityDepot and MidlandPort.[3]

ChristchurchNZ, the city's economic development agency, points to a growing aerospace sector in Canterbury and calls the city an Antarctic gateway.[4]

From a business card to a repeat buyer

A Canterbury retailer met an Indian textile exporter on a trade visit. Climb the ladder: each rung is a kind of WhatsApp message the exporter may now send, and each move needs the buyer to do something first.

The FTA changes the price on the quote, not the rules for sending it. A Christchurch buyer's card is still not consent, and the yes has to come before the first offer, not with it.

The New Zealand guide sets out the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act's three steps and the Privacy Act duties that apply to the contacts you hold.

Why: Orders every month

Updates leave your ERP automatically and the account team answers every question in one thread.

Illustrative. New Zealand's spam law covers instant messaging and asks for consent, a clear sender and a working unsubscribe; Meta asks for an opt-in. The New Zealand guide explains both.

Questions Christchurch businesses ask

A Christchurch retailer gave us a card on a trade visit. When may we start sending our FTA price list on WhatsApp?
When the retailer has agreed to receive offers from you. A card is not that agreement, and New Zealand's spam law asks for consent before a commercial message. Email the price list, invite them to scan a QR that opens a chat, and send offers as marketing templates, at ₹7.41 each, once they say yes.
Our containers for Canterbury buyers discharge at Lyttelton. Are arrival notices utility messages?
Yes. An update about an order the buyer placed, such as dispatch, arrival at Lyttelton or delivery from the inland depot, is a utility template at ₹0.9938 per delivered message to a +64 number. Your ERP can send it through the API when the status changes.
Our Christchurch buyers finish work before our Indian office opens. When do our working hours overlap?
For about two hours. Under New Zealand daylight time, 15:00 to 17:00 in Christchurch is 07:30 to 09:30 IST; from the first Sunday in April it is 08:30 to 10:30 IST. Use that slot for live replies and schedule templates for the Christchurch morning.
Our carpet workshop in Bhadohi buys wool from a Canterbury supplier. Can our purchase team message them on WhatsApp?
Yes. Purchase orders, lot questions and shipping documents are business conversations, not marketing. If the supplier writes to you, your team replies freely for 24 hours; to open a thread yourself, send an approved utility template to a contact who agreed to hear from you.
Indian students we placed in Christchurch read English, but their parents prefer Hindi. Do we need two templates?
Yes: one English (NZ) version for the student and one Hindi version for the parent, each approved by Meta. The student's +64 number is charged at ₹0.9938 for a utility update, the parent's +91 number at ₹0.19. Record a separate opt-in for each number.
Our New Zealand company in Christchurch imports from our factory in India. Which one should hold the InfiQ account?
InfiQ is built for India-based businesses: it bills in rupees with GST and keeps customer data in India. If the Indian company runs the messaging, it can hold the account and message +64 numbers at the New Zealand rate. If your business is based in Christchurch, talk to sales about whether InfiQ fits.
