01 · How it works, in 5 steps
How does a WhatsApp channel work?
- 1
Create the channel in the app
In the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, open the Updates tab and create a channel with a name, description and icon that match your WhatsApp Business Profile, so followers recognise it at a glance.
- 2
Set visibility and admins
Decide whether the channel can be found in the directory, add co-admins so posting does not depend on one phone, and choose which emoji reactions followers may use.
- 3
Share the invite link everywhere
Every channel has a link of the form
https://whatsapp.com/channel/.... Put it on your website, receipts, social profiles and in-store signs, and mention it when agents close a chat. - 4
Post on a rhythm, with one point per post
Short, regular updates (new stock, timings, results, tips) with one clear call to action each. Polls are the only structured feedback a channel gives you, so use them to ask what followers want.
- 5
Move interested followers into a chat
Add a click-to-chat link or QR code to posts ('Message us to book'). Followers who want one-to-one help open a private chat, where you can serve them and ask for marketing opt-in.
02Try it
Hands-on: use the controls to work through it yourself.

03What is a WhatsApp channel?
WhatsApp Channels is a one-to-many broadcast feature in the Updates tab of the WhatsApp app, next to Status. Anyone, including a business, can create a channel, and anyone can follow it from an invite link, a QR code or the searchable channel directory. Admins post text, photos, videos, stickers, voice notes and polls; followers see the posts, react with emoji, vote in polls and forward posts to their own chats, but cannot reply to the business inside the channel.
The privacy model is the reverse of a contact list. Following a channel does not reveal a follower's phone number to the admin (unless they are already a saved contact) or to other followers, and the admin's number is not shown to followers. The business never holds a list of who follows, so there is no opt-in to collect and no way to message one follower from the channel. Updates are stored on WhatsApp's servers for up to 30 days and, unlike personal chats, are not end-to-end encrypted by default.
A channel is not an API Broadcast. A broadcast through the WhatsApp Business Platform delivers an approved template into each opted-in customer's private chat, can be segmented and personalised, invites a two-way conversation and is billed per delivered message. A channel post goes to a public feed, is the same for every follower, has no per-post charge and starts no conversation. It also differs from WhatsApp Groups for Business, where members see and talk to each other. In June 2025 Meta announced promoted channels and paid channel subscriptions, alongside WhatsApp Status Ads, as ways to grow and earn from channels.
Key takeaways
- A WhatsApp channel is a one-way feed in the Updates tab: admins post, and followers read, react with emoji, vote in polls and forward.
- Followers' phone numbers are not shown to the admin or other followers, so a channel builds an audience without collecting contacts.
- Channel posts do not go through the Cloud API, are not billed per message and do not open a customer service window.
- Channel updates are stored on WhatsApp's servers for up to 30 days and are not end-to-end encrypted by default.
- Use a channel for public updates and an opted-in API broadcast for personal, targeted or transactional messages.
04 · Why it matters
Why does a WhatsApp channel matter?
Channels give a business a free, low-friction way to reach people who want its updates but would never hand over a phone number: regulars of a cafe, readers of a local news brand, students of a coaching institute. The trade-off is control. There is no targeting, no personalisation, no conversation and no guarantee that a follower is notified, so a channel complements an opted-in list rather than replacing it. Knowing which job each does keeps a business from pushing personal or transactional content into a public feed, and from paying for broadcasts that a free channel post would serve just as well.

06 · Mistakes to avoid
Common mistakes with a WhatsApp channel
Posting personal or transactional content
Order updates, OTPs, account details and anything about one customer do not belong in a public feed. Send them as templates through the API to the customer's own chat.
Expecting the channel to build your contact list
You never see followers' numbers, so a big channel is not a marketing list. Add click-to-chat links to posts and ask for opt-in inside the chats they start.
Posting like a blast
Several hard-sell posts a day get a channel muted or unfollowed. Post less often, with something useful each time, and keep promotions to a minority of posts.
Relying on it for urgent news
Followers see posts when they open the Updates tab, and notifications depend on each follower's settings. For time-critical messages such as a cancelled class, use templates to the people affected.
Running it from one phone
If the only admin leaves or loses the phone, the channel stalls. Add at least one co-admin and keep the account details with the business, not an individual.
07Example: A Chennai bakery's channel and its order chats
A bakery chain with four outlets in Chennai starts a channel and prints its QR code on every cake box. Within two months about 6,500 people follow it. Each morning the bakery posts the day's specials, and once a week a poll asks which flavour to bring back. Every post ends with a click-to-chat link for custom-cake orders. Those chats land in the bakery's API inbox, where customers are asked whether they would like festive offers on WhatsApp, and about 900 opt in. Order confirmations and pick-up reminders go to customers as utility templates in their own chats; nothing personal is ever posted to the channel.
08 · Pro tips
Best practices for a WhatsApp channel
- Name the channel exactly as customers know the business and use the same logo as your business profile.
- Point people to the channel in replies to frequent questions: 'timings, offers and new stock are posted on our channel'.
- Use a poll before a paid campaign to learn which offer followers actually want.
- Review follower growth after each post type and keep the formats that hold followers.
