01 · How it works, in 5 steps
How does the WhatsApp read rate work?
- 1
Store every status
Subscribe to message statuses and store them by
wamid, with delivered and read timestamps per message joined to its campaign and template. - 2
Divide by delivered
Read rate = read ÷ delivered. Dividing by sent or attempted mixes deliverability problems into an engagement metric.
- 3
Fix the reading window
Most reads happen within hours, some take days. Report read rate at a fixed age — for example 24 hours and 7 days after the send — so campaigns compare fairly.
- 4
Compare like with like
Compare the same template type, audience and time of day across campaigns, and for marketing templates check Meta's benchmarks in WhatsApp Manager.
- 5
Work on the drivers
Raise read rate with relevance and timing: a recognisable display name, a header that says why the message matters, sends at hours your audience is active, and fewer messages to people who have stopped reading.
02Try it
Hands-on: use the controls to work through it yourself.

03What is the WhatsApp read rate?
Read rate is the share of delivered WhatsApp messages that recipients read: read messages divided by delivered messages, times 100. It is counted from message statuses. Each message you send moves through sent and delivered, and when the recipient opens the chat with it on screen, the status webhook reports read — the blue ticks. Read rate is usually calculated per campaign or per template, for business-initiated messages.
The number is a floor, not an exact count. A recipient who has switched off read receipts in WhatsApp's privacy settings generally does not report reads, and someone who reads the text in a notification preview without opening the chat does not trigger one either. Statuses can arrive late or out of order, so a message may show read before you have stored its delivered status — and a read always implies the message was delivered.
Read rate is why WhatsApp is compared favourably with email: messages land in the same list as personal chats, and reads typically run far above email open rates. But the two are measured differently. An email open is a tracking image loading, which privacy features such as Apple Mail Privacy Protection can trigger with no person reading; a WhatsApp read comes from the recipient's app. Read rate sits between Deliverability, which stops at the device, and Reply Rate and Click-Through Rate, which measure action.
Key takeaways
- Read rate is read messages divided by delivered messages, counted from read status webhooks.
- It is a lower bound: people with read receipts off, or who read only the notification, report no read.
- WhatsApp reads come from the recipient's app, so they are a cleaner signal than email opens, which rely on tracking images.
- Compare read rates with your own past campaigns and Meta's benchmarks, not with email open rates.
- Read rate shows attention; reply rate and click-through rate show whether people act.

05 · Why it matters
Why does the WhatsApp read rate matter?
Read rate is the quickest signal of whether a message earned attention: it moves within hours, long before replies or sales arrive. A falling read rate on a recurring campaign is an early warning of fatigue — people still receive the messages but stop opening them, and for many the next step is to mute or block. For marketing sent through the Marketing Messages API for WhatsApp, Meta also shows read-rate benchmarks against similar businesses, which makes the number useful for deciding what to fix first.
06Example: Same offer, two read rates
A Kolkata saree retailer sends the same Puja offer to two segments. Customers who bought in the last six months read 78% of delivered messages within 24 hours; customers whose last purchase was more than two years ago read 41%. To check the gap is not just read receipts, the team compares reply rates, which show the same pattern. It moves the dormant segment off the weekly offer and onto a single, more personal re-engagement message each quarter.
07 · In code
The WhatsApp read rate in code
-- One row per outbound wamid, with timestamps filled from status webhooks.SELECT campaign_id,COUNT(*) FILTER (WHERE delivered_at IS NOT NULL OR read_at IS NOT NULL) AS delivered,ROUND(100.0 * COUNT(*) FILTER (WHERE read_at <= sent_at + INTERVAL '24 hours')/ NULLIF(COUNT(*) FILTER (WHERE delivered_at IS NOT NULL OR read_at IS NOT NULL), 0), 1)AS read_rate_24h,ROUND(100.0 * COUNT(*) FILTER (WHERE read_at <= sent_at + INTERVAL '7 days')/ NULLIF(COUNT(*) FILTER (WHERE delivered_at IS NOT NULL OR read_at IS NOT NULL), 0), 1)AS read_rate_7dFROM whatsapp_messagesWHERE direction = 'outbound'AND sent_at >= NOW() - INTERVAL '30 days'GROUP BY campaign_idORDER BY read_rate_24h DESC;
A read implies delivery, so count a message as delivered if either timestamp is set.
08 · Mistakes to avoid
Common mistakes with the WhatsApp read rate
Dividing by sent
Using sent or attempted messages as the base blends delivery failures into engagement. Divide reads by delivered messages.
Reading the number too early
A read rate taken an hour after the send undercounts slower readers. Fix the window and compare campaigns at the same age.
Comparing with email open rates
The signals differ, so a WhatsApp read rate and an email open rate are not like for like. Compare WhatsApp with WhatsApp.
Treating unread as uninterested
Read receipts and notification previews hide some reads. Check reply and click rates before cutting a segment for low reads.
Optimising reads alone
A teaser that gets opened but not acted on wastes the read. Pair read rate with reply, click and conversion rates.
09 · Pro tips
Best practices for the WhatsApp read rate
- Use a header that tells the reader at once why the message matters to them.
- Send when your audience is active: check reads by hour across past campaigns.
- Watch read rate by segment; fatigue shows there first.
- Keep your display name and profile picture recognisable so people know who is writing.
