Sahibganj district covers 1,702 sq km in nine blocks: Sahibganj, Mandro, Borio, Barhait, Taljhari, Rajmahal, Udhwa, Pathna and Barharwa.[1]
The district website lists Hindi, Santhali and Bengali as its languages and gives a literacy rate of 52.04%.[1]
Its history is bound to Santhal Pargana, made a separate district in 1855 from parts of Bhagalpur and Birbhum after the Santhal Hul of 1854–55 led by Sido and Kanu.[2]
Man Singh made Rajmahal the capital of Bengal in 1592; Shah Shuja made it the capital again in 1639, and it remained the Mughal Viceroy's seat until 1660.[2]
Hiuen Tsang mentioned the fort of Teliagarhi in 645 AD, and Sher Shah Suri and Humayun fought a decisive battle near it in 1538.[2]
Sahibganj station is a major railhead of the Eastern Railway, 294 km from Patna by rail, and NH 33 links the district to Ranchi.[3]
