Kargil sits roughly 200 km from Srinagar, Leh, Padum and Skardu, and the pass to Srinagar is snowbound from November to May. Guests plan around the road, and they ask about it on WhatsApp.

Dried apricots, ordered from Delhi

A customer in Delhi asks a Kargil apricot seller for dried apricots for the winter. Play the conversation bubble by bubble.

The order is ordinary shop talk until the last bubble. The buyer's question opens a 24-hour window in which photos, the grade buttons and the payment confirmation are free-form replies.

The dispatch notice goes days later, so it needs an approved template, written once and reused for every parcel of the season. The 24-hour service window explains the rule in full.

Market brief

Kargil in seven lines

From the Kargil district administration's pages and Invest India's ODOP list.

  1. 01

Kargil became a separate district in 1979, split from the former Leh district; the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, was commissioned in July 2003 with 30 councillors; Ladakh became a union territory on 31 October 2019.[2]

  2. 02

The district covers 14,036 sq km in 129 villages. Census 2011 counted 1,40,802 people, 16,338 of them urban.[3]

  3. 03

Kargil lies roughly 200 km from Srinagar, Leh, Padum and Skardu, and was once a trading hub for tea, wool, carpets, silk and precious stones, with traders from China and Central Asia.[1],[2]

  4. 04

Leh airport is 220 km away and Srinagar's 260 km; the pass between Srinagar and Kargil is likely to be snowbound from November to May, while the Leh–Kargil and Kargil–Drass roads are open almost all year.[5]

  5. 05

The district opened to tourists in 1974; its tourism page lists Drass, Mulbek, Panikhar, Rangdum and Padum, the Nun-Kun peaks, and 1,01,924 tourist arrivals in 2017, the latest full year it gives.[1],[4]

  6. 06

Shina, Balti, Purig and Ladakhi are spoken; because Balti and Shina are written in Urdu script, Urdu is common in the area.[2]

  7. 07

Invest India's One District One Product list names apricot and tourism as Kargil's products.[6]

Who in Kargil starts first

Four kinds of business in the town and its valleys, and the messages that fit each.

Hotels, guest houses and homestays

Private hotels, guest houses and homestays sit beside the Tourism Department's own units, and their guests plan around the passes.[4],[5]

  • Booking confirmation and arrival date
  • Change-of-dates replies
  • Check-in directions

Trek, rafting and expedition outfitters

The district lists mountaineering, trekking, river rafting and skiing, with expedition teams approved every season by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation.[4]

  • Replies to foreign and domestic enquiries
  • Trip and gear confirmations
  • Pickup times from Kargil town

Apricot growers and dried-fruit sellers

Apricot is Kargil's first ODOP product, sold to buyers across India who see it first as a photo.[6]

  • Photo and price replies
  • Payment received and packing notes
  • Dispatch and tracking notices

Taxis and transporters

Government buses run to Padum, Panikhar and along the highway when the roads are open; private taxis carry the rest, to Leh, Srinagar and the valleys.[5]

  • Seat and vehicle confirmations
  • Departure time reminders
  • Replies to group enquiries

Urdu, Hindi and English templates

The district says Urdu is common in the area, and Meta approves Urdu, Hindi and English templates, each version separately.

Balti, Shina, Purig and Ladakhi are not Meta template languages, so templates go out in Urdu, Hindi or English. Replies inside the 24-hour window can be in any language your staff write. InfiQ's own support team works in English and Hindi.
