WhatsApp Business API for Halisahar's jute-product makers, mill suppliers and shops

Kumarhatta, Haveli Shahar, Halisahar: a river town that has changed its name and its trades, and kept its ghats.

Halisahar has been Kumarhatta, Haveli Shahar and, since at least Akbar's time, Halisahar. It was a poet-saint's town before it was a mill town, and a mill town before it was a suburban stop 42 km from Sealdah. Its businesses today carry a little of each.

Scrub along the timeline to see how Halisahar's name and trades changed, and where its businesses stand now.

The timeline explains who a Halisahar business writes to. The mills that remain still buy stores and services; the district's jute-diversified-products line keeps the fibre in small workshops; and the station and ghats bring commuters and visitors who expect a quick answer.

Two jute mills still run; the station on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line is 42 km from Sealdah, and ferries leave from two ghats.

Every event is from the town's recorded history. The last marker is where a Halisahar business begins with WhatsApp: a riverside town whose customers are mill buyers, commuters and visitors.

Halisahar in seven lines

From the North 24 Parganas district administration, Eastern Railway and Invest India's ODOP list, with Wikipedia only for the town's history, mills and transport.

Halisahar is a municipality in the north of the Barrackpore subdivision, within the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority area; the Hooghly forms its western edge, Naihati and Kanchrapara, which was carved out of Halisahar in 1917, are neighbours, and Kalyani in Nadia lies to the north.[4],[5]

The town was earlier called Kumarhatta, was known as Haveli Shahar in the 13th century and appears as Halisahar in the Ain-i-Akbari; its municipality dates from 1903.[4]

Ramprasad Sen, the 18th-century Shakta poet, died here, and Rani Rashmoni, who founded the Dakshineswar temple, was born here; the Nigamananda Ashram is a landmark.[4]

Jute and paper mills came to the riverbank in the early 20th century; the Hukumchand Jute Mill at Hazinagar, founded in 1919, still runs, and two mills remain in operation.[4]

Eastern Railway lists stores depots at Halisahar and Kanchrapara for its Kanchrapara workshop.[2]

Halisahar station is on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line, 42 km from Sealdah; State Highway 1 passes through, and ferries run from the Dunlop Sahaganj and Paper Mill ghats.[4]

Invest India's ODOP list names steel furniture, jute diversified products and jewellery boxes as North 24 Parganas's products; the district has 27 municipalities.[3],[1]

Questions Halisahar businesses ask

Our Halisahar workshop makes jute bags, one of the district's ODOP lines. A buyer in Kolkata asks for samples. Can we send photos and prices in reply?
Yes. The buyer's message opens a 24-hour window in which your staff can send photos, videos and prices with no template. Each reply is charged at ₹0.145, and the window restarts whenever the buyer writes again.
We supply stores to the jute mills at Hazinagar in Halisahar. Can we send each mill its delivery note and invoice on WhatsApp?
Yes, if the mill's purchase staff gave you the number for orders. Delivery notes and invoices for an order placed are utility templates at ₹0.19, approved once in English, Bengali or Hindi, and they need no opt-in to offers.
We stage performances at the Halisahar Lok Sanskriti Bhaban. Can we send ticket confirmations and a reminder on the day of the show?
Yes. A ticket confirmation and a show-day reminder for a booking already made are utility templates at ₹0.19. Keep notices about other shows out of them; those are marketing and go only to people who asked to hear about them.
Visitors come to Halisahar for the Nigamananda Ashram and Ramprasad Sen's town. Can our guest house send room confirmations and directions from the station?
Yes. A room confirmation, directions from Halisahar station and a reminder the day before are utility templates for a stay already booked, at ₹0.19. Replies while the visitor is still asking questions go at ₹0.145.
Some of our customers live across the Hooghly and come over on the Paper Mill Ghat ferry. Do messages to them cost more than to customers in Halisahar?
No. Meta charges by the recipient's country code, so every +91 number is billed at the India rate, on either bank of the river. Replies are ₹0.145 each and utility templates ₹0.19.
Our sweet shop near Halisahar station wants to send festival offers to commuters who have bought from us. Is that allowed?
Only to customers who agreed to receive offers, with a record of when and how. A purchase is not an opt-in. The offer goes as an approved marketing template at ₹0.94, with a way to opt out; ask for the yes at the counter.
