Chaibasa in nine lines
From the West Singhbhum district administration's pages, IBEF's Jharkhand profile and Invest India's ODOP list; the division, the university and the railway are general background from Wikipedia.
After the British conquest of Kolhan in 1837, a new district called Singhbhum was constituted with Chaibasa as its headquarters.[2]
When Singhbhum was divided in 1990, its eastern part became East Singhbhum with Jamshedpur as headquarters and the western blocks kept Chaibasa; in 2001 Saraikela-Kharsawan was formed from it with 8 blocks.[1]
West Singhbhum now has 18 blocks and 3 subdivisions over 5,291.02 sq km, lists Ho, Santali and Hindi as its languages, and says most of its people are tribal.[1],[2]
The district calls its Saranda forest, the 'seven hundred hills', known the world over; Tholkobad, a forest village there, is known for the sal tree called 'Saranda Queen'.[1],[3]
Jojohatu, 22 km west of Chaibasa, is a forest village noted for chromite deposits and an iron ore mine; by IBEF's count Jharkhand holds 26% of India's iron ore reserves.[3],[5]
Lupungutu, 2 km west of the town, has a perennial spring; Hirni's waterfall lies on the Ranchi–Chaibasa road; Kera holds a three-day fair at Chaitra Sankranti, Mahadebsal a large fair at Shivratri and Ramtirtha one at Makar Sankranti.[3]
Chaibasa is also the headquarters of the Kolhan division and of Kolhan University, and Tata College is among its colleges.[4]
The town is on the railway south to Odisha, with a Vande Bharat service between Tatanagar and Brahmapur passing through, and on State Highway 5.[4]
