Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district was created in October 2016. It covers 3,253 sq km and had 7,70,833 residents at the 2011 Census, in 17 mandals and two revenue divisions, Bhongir and Choutuppal.[1]
Bhongir, also called Bhuvanagiri, is the headquarters, about 48 km from Hyderabad.[1]
Its fort, a tenth-century citadel the district attributes to the Western Chalukyas, stands on a monolithic rock.[1],[2]
The district is named after the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Yadagirigutta, a hilltop cave temple often called the Telangana Tirupathi.[1]
Pochampally, where the Bhoodan movement began in 1951, is known around the world for its ikat handloom weaves.[1]
