For India-based retailers, tour operators, recruiters, universities and exporters with customers in Kuala Lumpur: how the 24-hour window runs when KL is two and a half hours ahead, which templates to write in Tamil, Malay and English, and what a +60 message costs in rupees.

One evening message from Kuala Lumpur, and the 24 hours it opens

Drag through the day after a shopper writes at 21:00 in Kuala Lumpur. Everything inside the window can be free-form; after it, only a template.

A 21:00 message in Kuala Lumpur arrives at 18:30 in India, when many desks are closing. Answer it before you leave and the conversation is already moving; leave it until morning and you still have until 18:30 IST the next day, but the customer has waited a night.

Inside the window, every reply is a service message and can be in any language: Tamil from an agent in Chennai, Malay from a colleague who reads it, English from anyone. Once it closes, the next update needs an approved template, which is why the store's morning update should go out while the window is still open. Your store can send it through the developer API.

Kuala Lumpur and India, from the High Commission

Figures from the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur's June 2026 brief, with IBEF's trade detail.

Malaysia is home to an estimated 2.9 million members of the Indian diaspora. Its 2.75 million people of Indian origin make up the second-largest such community in the world.[1],[3]

About 90% of Malaysia's people of Indian origin are of South Indian origin, including about 2 million Tamil speakers; others speak Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Gujarati and Bengali.[1]

About 160,000 Indian nationals live in Malaysia, including over 47,000 professionals, 100,000 workers and 10,000 students.[1]

In 2025, 1.56 million Indians visited Malaysia and over 330,000 Malaysians visited India. Malaysia's visa waiver for short visits by Indian nationals has been extended to 31 December 2026.[1]

Bilateral trade was US$21.05 billion in 2025-26 on India's Department of Commerce figures, and it can be settled in Indian rupees since April 2023. Vegetable oil was India's largest import from Malaysia, at US$3.18 billion.[1],[2]

India's cultural centre in Kuala Lumpur, set up in February 2010 and renamed after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 2015, teaches Carnatic vocal, Kathak, yoga and Hindi.[1]

Language

The same update in Tamil, Malay and English

Meta approves each language version separately. For Kuala Lumpur, most Indian businesses need all three.

Telugu (te), Malayalam (ml), Punjabi (pa), Gujarati (gu) and Bengali (bn) are on Meta's list too, for the smaller communities the High Commission names. InfiQ's own support team works India time, in English and Hindi.

Questions Kuala Lumpur businesses ask

A shopper in Brickfields messages us at 21:00 Malaysian time. How long do we have to reply from India?
Twenty-four hours: until 21:00 the next day in Kuala Lumpur, 18:30 IST. Every reply in that time is a free-form service message at ₹1.23, in any language. After it, the next message needs an approved template.
Can Deepavali offers to Malaysian Indian customers in Kuala Lumpur go out in Tamil?
Yes, as a Tamil (ta) marketing template to customers who agreed to promotions from you: ₹7.56 per delivered message to a Malaysian number. Malaysia's data law covers direct marketing; the Malaysia guide explains it.
Travellers from India land at KLIA on their +91 numbers. Which rate applies to their pickup messages?
The India rate. Meta prices by the recipient's country code, so a pickup update to a +91 number costs ₹0.19 even when it is read in Kuala Lumpur. If the traveller gives you a Malaysian number, the Malaysia rate applies.
Kuala Lumpur is two and a half hours ahead of India. When should a campaign leave to arrive at 10:00 there?
At 07:30 IST, all year, since neither country uses daylight saving. That is before most Indian offices open, so schedule the broadcast in Asia/Kuala_Lumpur time and let it go on its own.
Do templates for Kuala Lumpur need Malay as well as English and Tamil?
Only for contacts who read it. Malay (ms), English (en_MY) and Tamil (ta) are all on Meta's list; submit the versions your customers need and record each contact's language so the right one goes out.
We recruit Indian professionals for employers in Kuala Lumpur. Can candidates get joining updates on WhatsApp?
Yes, once each candidate has opted in. Interview dates, document checklists and joining instructions are utility templates: ₹0.19 to a candidate's +91 number in India, ₹1.23 once they switch to a Malaysian number.
Our company in Kuala Lumpur sells to the same Tamil-speaking customers as our Indian brand. Can it hold the InfiQ account?
InfiQ serves India-based businesses: it bills in rupees with GST and keeps customer data in India, so the Indian company is the natural account holder and can message Kuala Lumpur numbers at the Malaysia rate. If your business is based in Kuala Lumpur, talk to sales about whether InfiQ fits.
