Kawardha district came into existence on 6 July 1998 from Kawardha tehsil of Rajnandgaon and Pandaria tehsil of Bilaspur, with Kawardha as headquarters; it was renamed Kabirdham on 10 March 2003.[2]

The name recalls Kabir Sahib's visit and the seat set up by descendants of his disciple Dharamdas; the town lies on the southern bank of the Sakri river.[1]
