How to use the WhatsApp Text Formatter

WhatsApp Text Formatter: questions and answers
How do I make text bold or italic on WhatsApp?
Wrap it in symbols: *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic, ~tildes~ for strikethrough and three backticks for monospace. There must be no space just inside the symbols — “* sale *” stays plain. This formatter adds the symbols for you and shows the result as WhatsApp will render it.
Does WhatsApp support lists and quotes?
Yes. Start a line with “* ” or “- ” for a bulleted list, “1. ” for a numbered list and “> ” for a quote; a single backtick around text formats it as inline code. Older app versions show the raw symbols for lists and quotes, so keep the message readable either way.
Does the formatting work in templates and broadcasts?
Yes — template bodies and Cloud API text messages support the same bold, italic, strikethrough and monospace markers, and the customer's app renders them. Formatting characters count towards the 1,024-character template and 4,096-character message limits.
What are the Unicode styles for?
Places that do not understand WhatsApp's symbols — an Instagram bio, a display name, another app. They swap letters for look-alike Unicode characters, so the style travels anywhere. Screen readers and search may not treat them as normal text, so use them for short accents rather than whole messages.
Why isn't my WhatsApp formatting working?
The markers must touch the text they wrap: *bold* works, * bold * does not. A marker in the middle of a word is often ignored, inline styles do not continue across a line break, and monospace blocks need three backticks on each side. Some keyboards also swap symbols for look-alikes — select the text and use the formatter's buttons to get the exact characters.
