01 · How it works, in 5 steps
How does a prepaid wallet work?
- 1
Size the first top-up
Estimate a month of deliveries per category, multiply by the rates — for example ₹0.19 per utility message and ₹0.14 per OTP — and load enough for at least two weeks of peak traffic.
- 2
Set a low-balance alert
Choose a threshold worth several days of normal sending rather than a round number you will outgrow, and send the alert to both finance and operations.
- 3
Turn on auto-recharge or name an owner
Use a payment mandate where the provider offers one, or assign a named person to recharge whenever the alert fires — including at weekends.
- 4
Check the balance before big campaigns
Compare a broadcast's estimated cost with the balance before scheduling it, so a festive campaign cannot drain the funds OTPs depend on.
- 5
Reconcile every month
Match deductions against delivered messages by category and the provider's statement, track the effective cost per message, and download top-up invoices for GST input tax credit.
02Try it
Hands-on: use the controls to work through it yourself.
Follow a wallet from top-up to pause
- Paused0–3% of top-up
- Low-balance alert3–20% of top-up
- Healthy20–100% of top-up
Auto-recharge
100% of top-up
A saved mandate tops the wallet back up and sending resumes.
Auto-recharge: 100% of top-up — Healthy zone. A saved mandate tops the wallet back up and sending resumes.
03What is a prepaid wallet?
A prepaid wallet is the pay-in-advance billing model many Indian WhatsApp providers use. The business tops up a balance — by UPI, card or net banking — and each delivered message is deducted from it at its category rate, so marketing, utility, authentication and service messages each draw a different amount. Nothing is billed afterwards: the wallet balance is the spending limit.
Because deductions follow delivery, the balance falls as delivery statuses arrive, not when a campaign is queued. Most providers check funds before a large broadcast, send low-balance alerts at a threshold the business sets, and pause sending when the balance cannot cover the next message. Some offer auto-recharge from a saved payment mandate, so a busy day does not stop login codes or order updates.
It differs from a credit line, where Meta's credit is extended through a partner and usage is invoiced in arrears up to a limit, and from a WABA payment method, where the business attaches its own card or account and Meta charges it directly. With a wallet the Business Solution Provider (BSP) pays Meta and recovers the cost from your balance — often under pass-through pricing, at Meta's rates. The platform fee may be debited from the same wallet or invoiced separately, and in India GST is commonly charged at top-up.
Key takeaways
- A prepaid wallet is a balance loaded in advance with a WhatsApp provider and drawn down per delivered message.
- Each category draws a different amount, and failed or undelivered messages should never be deducted.
- When the balance cannot cover the next message, sending pauses — login OTPs and order updates included.
- Unlike a credit line, nothing is billed in arrears: the balance itself is the spending limit.
- Set low-balance alerts in days of sending, and turn on auto-recharge or name an owner for top-ups.
04 · Mistakes to avoid
Common mistakes with a prepaid wallet
Letting OTPs share an unguarded balance
A campaign can drain the wallet authentication depends on. Keep a reserved buffer — or a separate account for critical traffic — and alert early.
Fixed alert thresholds
A threshold set at launch becomes too low as volume grows. Express it as days of sending and review it monthly.
Assuming queued means deducted
Deductions follow delivery, so the balance keeps falling for hours after a broadcast as statuses arrive. Check estimated cost before sending, not the balance afterwards.
Losing GST credit on top-ups
If GST is charged at top-up, the top-up invoice is the document for input tax credit. Download it every time and make sure it carries your GSTIN.
05 · Pro tips
Best practices for a prepaid wallet
- Route low-balance alerts to a channel someone watches at weekends.
- Keep a few days of authentication volume as an untouchable buffer.
- Review deductions by category each month to spot a shift in mix early.
- Ask the provider what happens to an unused balance if you leave.
- Tell an empty wallet apart from a business eligibility payment issue: the first is your provider pausing sends, the second is Meta's 131042 error for a payment problem on the account.
06Example: A Bhopal lending app's Monday morning
A lending app in Bhopal keeps its wallet funded for about ten days of traffic, with an alert at three days' worth. On a Friday the marketing team schedules a large loan-offer broadcast that consumes most of the balance over the weekend. The low-balance alert fires on Saturday but goes to an unmonitored mailbox, and by Monday morning login OTPs stop. The fix is three rules: alerts go to an on-call channel, auto-recharge is switched on, and any broadcast above a set size needs a balance check before it is scheduled.

08 · Why it matters
Why does a prepaid wallet matter?
A wallet makes WhatsApp spend predictable — you cannot spend what you have not loaded — and suits businesses that prefer quick UPI top-ups to credit approvals. The trade-off is operational: an empty wallet stops every message, including the authentication codes customers need to log in and the order updates that keep support queues quiet. Treating the balance as a production dependency, with alerts and recharge rules, keeps that control from turning into an outage.
