WhatsApp Business API for Indian travel and trade desks serving Bern

Bern wrote common rules for international post in 1874. A WhatsApp message to the city has a few rules of its own.

Bern is the Swiss federal city and the seat of India's Embassy. For an Indian business it is mostly a travel corridor: Swiss clients heading to India, Indian groups heading for the Oberland, and a handful of buyers in between.

For Indian inbound and outbound tour operators, engineering exporters and Ayurveda and yoga businesses with clients in Bern and its canton: a sample conversation, the India–Bern record from the Embassy, which template languages fit, how Swiss consent rules apply, and what each message costs in rupees.

See it work

A Bern client, a Kerala trip and a visa appointment

A typical Bern conversation with an Indian inbound tour operator: the client writes first, the operator answers with a checklist template and then free-form, all inside one 24-hour window.

A Bern client may write in Bernese German, standard German or English. Reply in whichever language your agent shares with them; only the templates you send first need Meta's approval in a listed language such as de_CH.

The checklist is worth automating. Send it from your booking system through the developer API the moment a trip is confirmed, and let the shared team inbox catch the questions that follow.

Free-form text. A business can send it only within 24 hours of the customer’s last message.

The client's first message opens the 24-hour window, so everything after the checklist is a free-form service reply. Visa advice comes from the operator's visa desk, not from a template.

Bern and India, from the record

What the Embassy of India in Berne and the Universal Postal Union publish. National figures are marked as such.

The Embassy of India in Berne has consular jurisdiction over the whole of Switzerland and Liechtenstein; residents of French-speaking areas may use the Consulate General in Chambésy, Geneva.[3]

Visa applications to the Embassy go through VFS Global's India Visa Application Centre at Weststrasse 2, 3005 Bern; the Embassy's phone line runs 09:00 to 17:30 on working days.[2]

India's Commerce and Industry Minister came to Berne in June 2025 for Swissmem Industry Day and again in June 2026 to meet President Guy Parmelin; the seventh India–Swiss science and technology Joint Committee met in Berne on 1 September 2025.[1]

Nationally, Indian tourist arrivals in Switzerland rose to 154,822 in 2024, with 666,641 overnight stays, and Swiss tourists in India rose to 44,122.[1]

The city of Interlaken, in the canton of Bern, honoured the filmmaker Yash Chopra, who shot many films in the region, with a bronze statue.[1]

The Treaty of Bern, signed on 9 October 1874 by 22 nations, created the General Postal Union, renamed the Universal Postal Union in 1878; its International Bureau was set up in Berne.[4]

The Embassy has taken part in the Asia Pacific Film Festival held in Berne in January and February of 2025 and 2026.[1]

The city that standardised the post

Bern wrote common rules for international post in 1874. A WhatsApp message to the city has a few rules of its own.

In 1874 delegates from 22 nations met in Bern and agreed that a letter should travel between their countries on common terms. The WhatsApp Business Platform has its own common terms: an opt-in before you write first, an approved template outside the 24-hour window, and a price set by the country code of the person who receives it.

None of that is hard, but Bern clients notice when it is skipped. A Swiss traveller can object to an unrequested promotion, and the Swiss Unfair Competition Act requires prior consent before mass advertising by telecommunication.

Questions Bern businesses ask

Swiss clients in Bern book visa appointments at the centre on Weststrasse. Can we send them the checklist on WhatsApp?+
Yes, as a utility template once the client has opted in at booking: the documents to bring, the address of VFS Global's centre at Weststrasse 2 and any change of slot. Keep passport numbers out of the message. Each costs ₹1.50 to a Swiss number.
Our Indian tour groups stay in Interlaken. Which rate do updates to their Indian numbers cost?+
The India rate. Meta charges by the recipient's country code, so a utility update to a +91 number costs ₹0.19 even when it is read in the Bernese Oberland, and one to a Swiss +41 SIM costs ₹1.50. Collect both numbers at booking.
The canton of Bern has French-speaking areas. Should our templates be in de_CH or fr_CH?+
Both, sent per contact. Use German (Switzerland), de_CH, for clients in the city and fr_CH for those in the canton's French-speaking areas, with English for anyone who booked in English. Meta approves each language version separately.
We met engineering buyers at Swissmem's industry day in Berne. Can we follow up on WhatsApp?+
A follow-up the buyer asked for is fine; if they write to you first, your replies are free-form for 24 hours. A promotional template is marketing, ₹5.21, and the Swiss Unfair Competition Act requires prior consent for mass advertising. The [Switzerland guide](/whatsapp-business-api/countries/switzerland) covers the existing-customer route.
Bern clients write to our Kochi desk in Bernese German. Can agents answer in English?+
Yes. Inside the 24-hour window after the client writes, agents can reply in any language, and many Bern clients are comfortable in English. Templates you send first must be in a language on Meta's list, so keep de_CH and English versions ready.
Our Swiss partner agency has its office near the Bundesplatz. Can it hold the WhatsApp account?+
InfiQ serves India-based businesses: it invoices in rupees with GST, keeps customer data in India and supports teams in English and Hindi on India time. Your Indian company can hold the account and add the agency's staff as inbox users. If your business is based in Bern, talk to sales about whether InfiQ fits.
