West Champaran was carved out of the old Champaran district in 1972, with its headquarters at Bettiah; it covers 5,228 sq km with 18 blocks and 7 municipalities.[1]

Bagaha lies on the left bank of the Gandak near the Nepal border, about 64 km north-west of Bettiah; it is the headquarters of one of the district's three subdivisions and a police district of its own.[5]
