What 1,000 messages really cost in India — on every channel

WhatsApp, SMS, email and RCS side by side: per-message rates, total send cost, and the number that actually decides budgets — effective cost per read message. Every assumption is editable.

How it works

Three steps, no signup

1

Set your volume and WhatsApp category

Marketing, utility and authentication carry very different Meta rates — pick the one you actually send.

2

Adjust rates and read assumptions

Defaults are indicative Indian figures. Plug in your aggregator's SMS quote, your ESP's effective rate, your audience's device mix.

3

Read the per-read ranking

The bars rank channels by cost per message actually read — usually a very different order than cost per send.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where do the default rates come from?

The WhatsApp defaults mirror the current per-message India charges used across this site's pricing tools (three distinct rates: marketing ₹0.94, utility ₹0.19, authentication ₹0.14, ex-GST) — shown as transparent ₹ pricing in your InfiQ dashboard before you send. SMS, email and RCS defaults are indicative mid-points of typical Indian provider ranges; every cell is editable, and your provider's quote wins.

Why compare cost per READ message instead of per send?

Because attention is what you're buying. A ₹0.15 SMS read by 25% of recipients costs ₹0.67 per read message; a ₹0.94 WhatsApp marketing message read by 75% costs ₹1.25 — but a ₹0.19 utility message read at the same rate costs ₹0.25. Ranking channels on sticker price alone routinely picks the wrong one.

Why is RCS modelled at 40% delivery?

RCS business messaging only reaches Android devices with RCS switched on — a subset of Indian smartphones. Unsupported devices typically fall back to SMS, billed separately on your SMS route. Adjust the reach figure to your audience's actual device mix.

What costs sit outside the per-message rate?

SMS needs DLT registration (entity, headers, content templates) under TRAI rules; email's real cost is deliverability work (domain warm-up, SPF/DKIM/DMARC); RCS needs verified-sender onboarding via Google-authorised partners; WhatsApp needs Meta template approval plus a platform subscription. The caveat cards under the results cover each.

Are utility WhatsApp messages really free sometimes?

Yes — utility templates sent inside an open 24-hour customer-service window carry no Meta charge, so real-world utility spend often lands below what this model shows.
